New Cricket Pavilion opened by David Gower OBE
Valley End Cricket Club managed to safely open their new pavilion with an exhibition match against MCC. They also had cricket legend Dower Gower OBE on hand to cut the ribbon and entertain guests with cricketing stories.
Levitate won the invited competition to design this new pavilion in February 2018 and the club have worked with remarkable speed and know how to deliver the building with funding support from Sport England, the ECB and the Marathon Trust. For an amateur club their facilities are now unrivalled in the south of England.
Our design strategy was to orientate the pavilion at roughly 45 degrees to face both pitches and make best use of the topography of the sloping site. We kept the construction modular and then twisted the gull wing roof by 45 degrees to the changing rooms below to respond to the direction of the pitches, collect rainwater to recycle at the corners of the building, and to give the building it’s identity.
