Office Day Out: Walmer Yard
Our studio had a day experiencing Walmer Yard designed by British architect and academic Peter Salter in collaboration with Fenella Collingridge and Crispin Kelly over a course of more than a decade.
The interplay of light and shadow is reflected through stained glass inserts and a combination of naturals materials such as clay, concrete, timber and steel. These four tightly knit houses redefine the boundaries between privacy, proximity and openness on a domestic scale.
Clearly the intensity of thought in the project is amazing. Also interesting is that it doesn’t work as a project. It has no use and can’t be sold for anything like what would make it commercially viable. It’s a folly, and it’s great that these projects still exist as they are where the most interesting ideas are explored.
