Work in progress at Knowle Battery
Work is progressing well at Knowle Battery, a Scheduled Ancient Monument – currently on the Heritage at Risk register – that was built in the late 19th century to defend Plymouth, one of a string of land-facing fortifications.
Our conservation and repair work is being part-funded by Historic England, along with Plymouth County Council, who bought the site after World War II. These before and after photos show the excavation of what was once a swimming pool (later filled in), built in the 1950s within the parapets and roof of the guard house, strangely enough.
