Southernhay House Hotel

Exeter
2021

The Green Room is a new garden pavilion at the Southernhay House hotel in Exeter and creates space for dining, socialising and general events.

The massing is responsive to the form and materials of the adjacent Grade II* listed building. It is designed as a modular construction with the whole pavilion made up of a number of prefabricated parts due to the site constraints and the intention to reduce the number of on-site trades to improve quality. The foundations are screw piles, the exterior columns are a laser cut steel lattice referencing the existing veranda, and together these support a timber roof of pre-fabricated laminated plywood beams and plywood shell which is clad in wood fibre insulation and zinc. The glazing is divided up into small panels with openings to promote flexibility in use.

The intention was to add a pavilion that appears as if it has always been there and yet is completely of it’s time.
